Imagine...
...a world where the beauty of a woman is expressed through music and dance. Discover this world in all its glorious color and texture through Sha'Waza Belly Dance...American Tribal Style!!!!
Our Purpose and Commitment:
Sha'Waza Belly Dance was founded with the sole purpose to inspire every woman to discover her true inner strength and beauty and feel free to express it in all aspects of her life, not just dance.
The first thing all students learn is a moving meditation and gesture of gratitude and humility in the form of dance and music that guides them through overcoming daily obstacles, giving appreciation for all things and celebrating life, movement and womanhood.
Sha'Waza Belly Dance not only teaches dance but also promotes sisterhood and a bond between women that empowers them to reach new heights and horizons no matter their age, shape or size.
The History...
Over 20 years ago, Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance, began teaching a unique style of belly dance that quickly evolved into what was coined American Tribal Style. This separated it from classical styles of belly dance and described the "tribal unity" that is distinctively ATS.
What evolved was a system of movements, cues, transitions and formations that allowed a group of dancers to perform together without extensive rehearsal and choreography. The majority of ATS performance is improvisation, that is, made up on the spot. This creates a fascinating display that not only enthralls the audience but also the dancers...not knowing what to expect next. Each dance should be a unique and different combination of movements, color and texture than the other...thus performances should rarely ever be the same.
Fraya Aguilar, Director of Sha'Waza Belly Dance, has been learning and teaching belly dance in southern Utah since 1996.
Classes are available in St. George and Cedar City, Utah and Pasadena, California. See our "Classes" menu for more details.
